Situated 10 miles east of Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula, Sterling is an ideal place for tourists planning to wander into the encompassing wild of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Sterling is the entryway to the Swanson River and Swan Lake kayak highways, a chain of waterways, lakes, streams and portages in the northern marshes of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The majority of travelers interested in charter fishing and canoeing or oaring the wild conduits of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge base their trip at Soldotna. The Izaak Walton Recreation Area is one of the most visited spots here as it offers boating, picnicking and camping.
