Douglas, Arizona
Douglas is a small city close to the Mexican borders in Cochise County, Arizona. It is a rather charming community with excellent amenities and moderate cost of living. The city’s gem is undoubtedly the Beaux Arts-style Grand Theatre. A disastrous fire in the late 1950s caused severe damage to the building. Nowadays, a large scale renovation is in progress aiming to regain Grand Theatre’s past glory. For the nature enthusiasts, the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge is a definitive must see. It is about 17 miles east of the city. Here, during the 19th century, loads of battles took place between the US Cavalry against the Apache Indians as well as the Pancho Villa rebel army. The total size of the wildlife refuge is 2,309 acres with more than 283 species inhabiting this area (including doves, cottontail rabbits, and quails). Scenic natural landscapes ensure that you will enjoy hiking and mountain biking. You can find many quality discount hotels close to Douglas, such as Motel 6 in Benson. Its rooms are clean and the staff very accommodating.
