Smackover, Arkansas
The establishment of Smackover must be credited to one of the nation’s biggest and most sensational oil discoveries. Its sixty-eight-square-mile oil field drove the country’s oil yield in the mid 1920s. Besides its petroleum industry, Smackover is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors will have an ample chance to go fishing, hunting and boating here. The four day Oil Town Festival held in June is also a big draw for tourists. You can also view several unique and intriguing exhibits at the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources State Park.
