A borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Neptune City was incorporated in the year 1881 and its boundaries once included what is now Avon-by-the-Sea. Avon-by-the-Sea was later on created as a borough in 1900. Neptune City was named after Neptune, the Roman water deity and also because of its location on the Atlantic Ocean.
